  1. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor and his possible peerage.

There is much talk and controversy over whether Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor will be offered a peerage recently.

The Cardinal represents an institution part of whose ideology includes the notion that sex for pleasure is a sin, that sex is only for procreation, and that does its utmost to prevent free access to and use of condoms regardless of the consequences for aids, sexual health, poverty, or the burden of supporting an increasing population on finite resources.

In the 1980’s the Cardinal was aware that one of his priests ‘Michael Hill’ was a dangerous pedophile but not only did nothing to prevent the priest from having access to children but removed him from one parish and located him in another where he was less well known when the abuse came to light. The harm caused by Michael Hill could have been ended sooner had the Cardinal not tried to sweep it under the carpet. This is not the first time that priests within the Catholic order have been known to abuse children and the representatives within the Catholic church have responded by attempted to downplay the events.

The Cardinal has currently indicated that he will also do his utmost to prevent any dismantling of religious privileges or attempt to bring religious groups under the same laws that prohibit unfair discrimination i.e. discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation as everyone for example in defending religious organizations right to refuse adoptions to parents of certain sexual orientations. [Letter to Parliament Jan 2007 and related articles in the press]

So not only does the Cardinal represent an organization that privileges religious dogma over the common good but he has also made it very clear that his personal allegiance is to his religious authority even when serious harm could result from this as in the case of Michael Hill.

It is for these reasons that Cardiff Humanists most strongly object to any peerage to Cardinal Cormac O’Murphy and we call on you to raise this issue in parliament.
